Why The Evo 4G Is Dead

While it hasn't quite disappeared from Sprint stores yet, a startling realization is beginning to be found by Evo 4G users, both new and old... Apps have gotten BIGGER!

Unfortunately, as the progression or maybe even the evolution of Apps has happened, devices with limited internal storage are quickly becoming obsolete. Sure, there are options like Apps2SD or even the old just leave it stock, but if you truly want the unlimited experience, then you're going to need more than the 1/2 GB that the Evo 4G offers.

To round this out, keep in mind that the Evo 4G features 512MB of internal storage. Of this, about 1/2 is used by Gingerbread and Sense. This leaves around 250MB of App space. Half of this can be used up with just Google Maps (12MB), Google Docs (15MB), Google+ (30MB), Facebook (15MB) and Bejewelled 2 (50MB).

It might be time to finally root and remove that vintage bloatware that Sprint installed 2 years ago for newer options. Maybe just praying for that Evo 4G+ might work too...

Solving The White Reboot Screen

One area of frustration for all the EVO users, since the Gingerbread update that is, is the "White Reboot Screen from Hell". The white screen slows the device completely to a crawl while Sense reboots. While not all suffer from this terrible affliction, there are more than a few that have had this issue. So, after months of solid testing, the results of the cause are in.

First off, it appears that the cause of the Sense reboot issue is caused by Apps being placed on the SD card. When the SD card is read, it launches the App and Sense is terminated. It appears that this is a safety mechanism built into the file system. Why it's built this way, we aren't sure, but we can tell you we have certainly solved the issue by understanding why it's doing it.

By placing only 'media centric' Apps on the card, we eliminate the common resets and only reset Apps that don't fit well in the internal storage. Google+, Hulu and Netflix are 3 pretty large Apps that will eat the EVO's memory all too quickly. When launching Apps from the card, realize that Sense will reboot and you will get the white screen.

When using daily Apps like Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter, make sure to keep those on the device memory. It's these hourly drivers that seem to cause the phone to kick off regularly and require Sense to restart. By keeping them in the device memory, we've eliminated the reset issue until we launch an App that is stored on our SD card.

So, store on the device as much as possible, but for those monsters that need that SD storage, just be aware that the reset is real and learn to expect it.

5 Minute App Review: Criticall

Are you one of those people that really likes to shut the volume off on your device overnight, but doesn't want to miss an emergency phone call? Well, the folks that programmed Criticall have your answer. Criticall allows you to silence your device except for those calls from people that you deem worthy to interrupt your sleep, quiet time or even just the times you don't want to deal with people.

Criticall works perfectly on our devices, takes seconds to set up and allows complete customization for those that need it. For those that wonder, night time isn't the only time to use Criticall. Movie theaters (for when the kids are home with the sitter and you have your phone silenced), business meetings, or even other 'less opportune' times for your phone to ring off the hook are great times to activate Criticall.

Criticall:  5 out of 5 stars - available free from Getjar or $.99 in the Android Market.

Horrible Battery Life? Check That Signal!

Since day one, the HTC Evo 4G has been ridiculed for it's, "Not so great battery life - especially with the 4G radio on." We found a little something that makes life better for those Evo users that have poor battery life - and realized how big of impact it can make when it's not working correctly.

The Airave Airvana from Sprint is designed to boost your CDMA voice and 3G data signals in a 5000 to 10000 square foot area around the box. We received one about 45 days ago from Sprint to help with our dropped calls and 'no ring' calls that we experienced indoors. For the first 30 days, the box was sheer perfection. Since then, we've had nothing but issues.

The Airave began with sending bulk messages, like 20-30 at a time to the same user. Then it moved on to not holding a connection for more than 2 hours. Finally, it stopped connecting all together. Sprint said it was the Airave and they would replace it. That leads us up to today.

Before the Airave, our battery life was terrible - 2 to 3 hours indoors would drain 60% of our juice. We could make it 5 hours with little use before the 15% warning popped up and told us to charge. Once the Airvana was online, the same 'sitting time' would leave us at 80% with no use or about 5% per hour of use. There was definitely something there.

This morning, I did my usual unplugging procedure where upon leaving home, I would be sitting at 94-96% battery and ready for the day. Today, without the Airave, I was at a lowly 82%. In 55 minutes, my battery had plummeted from 100% to 82% with minimal use. Then I saw the real shocker...

Yes, you are seeing that correctly, 99% of time without signal is the worst the phone will register. That means for the hour that I was unplugged, the battery burned 20% of itself looking for a radio signal. I guess what we are trying to say is before you start pointing fingers at the battery of the EVO, maybe start looking at the quality of your signal. If you aren't getting more than 2 bars consistently, it might just be time to call Sprint.

PrinterShare Site Overwhelmed With Amazon App Of The Day Users

When it comes to printing from your Android device, PrinterShare has been at the top of the selections for some time. The $14.99 investment made you able to print a few different formats at first, but recent updates brought Gmail, Docs, PDF's and more into the fold. It was, for all intents and purposes, a lifeline for business users that needed hard copies of documents from their devices. You simply paid your fee, downloaded the PC software and you were good to go.

Late last year, Google released their 'cloud print' service that worked with the device and Chrome and could be set up to print to any computer that was synced to your "G" services. While we had decent results, we still preferred the ease of PrinterShare and still recommend it to everyone asking.

Today, the impossible happened, in that Amazon is giving away PrinterShare premium as their App of the Day. While this is an amazing freebie application and everyone should go get it, the one thing that stood out to us is the download times on the PrinterShare website. Normally, we can log in and download the software in seconds - today, it was almost 30 seconds before the site loaded. It also took nearly three minutes before the software was downloaded. The servers obviously weren't ready for this influx of customers.

Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come for a software program that we love dearly (although can we have a refund since it's free now? - hey, doesn't hurt to ask does it?) and a team that gives wonderful support. If the App of the Day continues to kill developers with 100k users that take advantage of the offering and straining their systems, we just might see the end of useful apps being offered. For now, head over to the Amazon App Store and grab PrinterShare - then head to printershare.com and grab the desktop software for your computer and enjoy the printing!

Sense 3.5 Coming To An Evo Near You?

In a wonderously shocking development, a few of those amazing developers have managed to cram the latest and greatest version of HTC Sense on to the Evo 4G. Check out the video above - and for the first 10 minutes or so, it's a bit tedius, but the last 2 minutes sure does have some excitement to it.

Maintenance Update Hitting Evos Now

Lucky Evo users woke up to a new OTA update this morning. Firmware version 4.53.651.1 is now making the download rounds for all the Evo 4G patrons. The firmware is a minor update to fix bugs and craziness that some users have been experiencing. These include:

The "Out of memory, Unable to send SMS error" has been corrected. If you are a Picasa user, they fixed the "Images cut off in Picasa issue". They also fixed "Group contacts not in alphabetical order issue". The "Image size issue with contact transfer over bluetooth" has also been resolved. Most importantly, the "Integrated voice recognition accuracy with voice search and voice-to-text" has been corrected.

Version 4.53.651.1 is available right now via automatic and manual download. If you want this update earlier than scheduled, simply press Menu - Settings + System Update + HTC Software Update and watch for bit to become available. You can expect to do the manual check more than a few times before it finds the update.

A quick word of caution to Root and Revolutionary users, it's not known if this destroys the root access or not. If you need to be rooted, do not take the OTA update until it's fully checked out.

Post #100 - Thanks for Following

It's not often that a blog is written almost entirely about a phone - from a phone. While there are plenty of EVO blogs out there, we've tried to remain true to a non-rooted, non-modified EVO 4G. We've covered news, how-to's, and even what you can do to make life easier with your EVO.

Today marks our 100th post on the device and we just wanted to thank you for following us. As the EVO's speculated EOL date comes closer, we'll continue to help everyone make the most of their device. Until that day comes though, keep tuning in to see advice, how to's and more!

Again, thanks for reading and we look forward to another 100 posts soon!

5 Minute App Review: Executive Assistant

For those new to Android and just aren't ready to leave that Windows Mobile or BlackBerry home screen behind, there is hope. Executive Assistant is the app that will change everything, or maybe just put everything back where it was.

Like a flash from the past, you can have that familiar Today Plus feel of a BlackBerry or that original Windows Mobile today screen. Executive Assistant makes it easy to see your your entire day in one quick glance.

Missed calls, messages, emails and more all on one compact home screen. It's a data overload, but in a good way. Easy to configure and even easier to use, the app is amazing for old school smartphone users and those that want it all on one screen.

Unfortunately, it takes the major leaps and bounds that home replacement widgets have provided and rolls you straight back to 2005.

Executive Assistant - $6.99 in the Amazon Appstore

Airave SMS Issues?

This one is coming at you straight from the personal experience department. Yesterday, my Evo began blasting friends and family with 25 to 30 text messages in repetitive fashion. Today, my wife's Evo started receiving multiples in the same fashion.

It was crazy times, and two calls to Sprint still had her device in a panic and me nervous about sending a text. That was until I said the word - Airave...

Once I mumble the word into the phone, the Sprint rep shoved me off to Airave support where 5 minutes later they were resetting my box. Apparently this is a known problem with the Airave support people and isn't general knowledge to the rest of the CSR's.

The warning signs to watch for are the scary "Radio Interface Resource Shortage" Error Code 64, Error Class 2 or the even easier to spot 'ghost messages' showing up multiple times a day. Once you see these, get outside where you have good coverage and call that magical *2 and get directly to Airave support. You'll thank us later.

Qik's New Premium Feature Takes Away From Long Time Users

Generally, first adopters get a bonus as a company grows and flourishes - or in most cases, gets bought out. Unfortunately, for EVO 4G users that have come to depend on Qik for Sprint on their devices, the new Premium service plan has cut the service level immensely from what was there previously.

From day 1, Sprint EVO 4G users could upload videos, chat away with friends and even share online streams with relatives with no additional cost. Today however, Qik announced for ALL users a new Freebie/Premium structure that decapitates the service that so many have been using for so long.

Beginning with the buyout of Qik by Skype (now a Microsoft company), the service level and quality of Qik has been dropping quickly. It began as an all-you-can-eat buffet of video sharing and streaming over Sprint's 4G network. Today, it has become a $5 bill to continue that usage. Sure, you still have the free option - capped at 25 uploads, but still offering the unlimited Qik to Qik service, and streaming (if it doesn't replace video #1 with the streamer)...

Basically, for EVO users, Qik was the fastest and easiest way to share videos with everyone on the internet. Today, we are now faced with paying that $5 fee per month or reassessing how to share videos or switching to YouTube, Facebook Video or another video sharing site to continue that practice over 25 flix. The chat service is easy enough to replace as Tango, Skype and for root users, GTalk are now all making use of the device's camera.

Overall, we just hope this prompts Sprint to allow bloatware removal on the 4G soon (maybe with one last update that fixes the Sense issue as well?) because for most avid video sharers, Qik just became dead weight and a hefty amount of storage space that isn't going to be used.

Maintenance Rollout For The Evo 4G Coming Soon

With hopeful eyes we read the amazing news of the HTC Evo's next maintenance upgrade coming in the next 10-14 days, just wishing to catch wind of a fix for the "Sense Loading Issue" that everyone loves so much. Unfortunately, the changelog made no mention of our little issue and that might be a good or bad thing... As for what was fixed, it was a pretty good list of issues -

HTC EVO Software Update - 4.53.651.1
Enhancements/Fixes:
- Integrated voice recognition accuracy with voice search and voice-to-text
- Image size issue with contact transfer over bluetooth
- Images cut off in Picasa
- Group contacts not in alphabetical order
- Out of memory, Unable to send SMS

Of these, obviously the voice recognition is the biggest issue, but the Picasa upload issue has been plaguing users for some time now as well. We can't recall ever sending a contact over bluetooth, but we're sure that's appreciated too. Recently, we've had a few days of network errors and Unable to send SMS problems, but that was probably either tower maintenance or just the network being busier than normal due to things like the east coast earthquake on Tuesday.

The rollout is expected sooner than later on this one as Sprint is probably going to make this the last update before ending the EVO's run in the next two months.

Important Notes:
- The new software version is: 4.53.651.1
- This update will be released in stages to devices over the next 1-2 weeks.  When manually trying to initiate the update, you may receive a message  that no update is available.  Please be patient and check back later, or you may wait until the update is automatically sent to your device.
- Refer to the HTC EVO Software Update blog for install instructions.

Remember, root users, if you are rooted, this may delete the root feature from your device. If you are not rooted, you should receive the notice to update soon if you don't want to manually do it yourself.

5 Minute App Review: Txt Msg Away Message

Don't we all love the Amazon Appstore Free App of the Day? Most of the time, the FAOTD is something fun, but not really useful. Today is definitely an exception. How many times have you jumped in the car and been driving down the road and heard that messaging tone go off? Well, stop worrying about that with Txt Msg Away Message.

Txt Msg Away Message is a simple widget program that turns on an auto reply txt message that is sent to anyone that messages you while it's active. At the movies? Turn it on... Driving? Turn it on... In a meeting? Turn it on...

This app is so simple its downright scary. Of course, there are a few issues with the program, but the only "major flaw" we saw with it was the inability to play nicely with apps like GoSMS and Handcent. Other than that, with stock messaging programs, this app is a wonderful deal.

Txt Msg Away Message - 4 out of 5 stars - $1.99 available in the Amazon Appstore or Android Market

Running A Business From The EVO4G: Employee Management

Sure, everyone in corporate America has been there, an employee calls in and tells you that they are sick, but they will do that spreadsheet, graphics project or other side project that they never have time for at the office. Most employers take advantage of this by letting the employee get paid for the day and getting those necessary projects done while they are out of the office. Unfortunately, most of the time, the employee spends about 45 minutes doing that project and then heads out to the mall, or lunch or another fun excursion on the companies dime. This gets us thinking about services meant for families, but not just limited to them.

Employee tracking has been around for some time, usually used by dispatchers to route delivery trucks or cab companies to route drivers, but has been applied in many ways. Smartphones have now brought software to the average company that normally wouldn't be able to use such features due to the cost of hardware and software. Today we are going to look at employee off-time productivity and how to make it more efficient.

Taking Work Home:

Taking work home is one of the most argued subjects on the planet. The nice part is that if you are cloud based - like Google Docs - you can have people all over the world simultaneously editing each others documents online and collaborating. The EVO's web browser does a great job with Google's mobile site for this and the GDocs app has even more power. The other nice feature about working this way is that documents are always backed up online - so if your hard drive fails after you've been editing for hours, you work isn't lost.

The other advantage to outfitting the office with EVO's is the wireless hotspot feature which allows your laptop to access the internet and share it's 4G connection with anyone around. Office work party at the park? Sure, why not...

Locating Services:

Finding out where employees are on their off time is a bit sketchy, but finding out where they are when they should be at work isn't all bad is it? If an employee decides to telecommute to the office for a day or two, shouldn't the employer be able to see them at home? It makes sense in our minds, and frankly, it should make sense in the employee's mind as well. With free software like Lookout, you can locate a users phone with the click of a mouse from the Lookout website. With Latitude, you can live track your employees everywhere they go - this feature works great with Google Business Email through Gmail.

You can also use this service to find the fastest responders for sales calls, repairs or trouble shooting issues. If you have a client that needs something yesterday, you can have your closest rep to the shop pick it up immediately and run in over to them faster than having their regular guy come back to the shop from 2 hours away and get it to them.

Meetings and Maps:

How many times have we been out and about and just hit the GPS button to find the closest Starbucks? This works great for client meetings as well. If you are on the way to the client's location and give them a quick call only to find out that they are at a meeting at a coffee shop on Pine, can you find them? Of course you can... Simply pop in coffee shops, Pine Street and see what comes up. Chances are the client won't mind if you offer to meet them at the same place they are at instead of missing out on seeing them for a few weeks.

The map feature on the EVO is very powerful. You can track friends, remember places and even navigate straight to them from the device. Saving your contacts will let you know exactly when and where to find them through the map program. There are even some 'location aware' apps that can send you reminders to visit clients or distributors when you are in their area.

Time Tracking:

Nothing kills the boss more than wasted time. Time management is one thing, but actually tracking the time you use for certain projects is even more important. TimeClock for Android gets our nod for this app for a few reasons. First, it is tablet compatible - which is great for those that are doing the whole Smartphone and Tablet thing. Second, export to spreadsheet is amazingly simple. Third, it has one touch access to punch in and out. And lastly, it's only $3.99 a license which for the amount of billable time you will start saving as a company will be paid off in about 6 minutes in most cases.

Not enough can be said for how much the EVO can do for your business and your employees. In the age where productivity is everything, there comes a point where the boss needs to have a little 'big brother' in them and we aren't talking about the CBS reality show here. Make sure you continue to check out our Evo Business guide as we will keep adding to this until Sprint EOL's the EVO.

Unlimited Everything - Under $50 a month?

Really, really... This is no gimmick, no craziness, no kidding... Sprint actually has available for all Android Powered Smartphones their Data Only Plan in the Relay Store. The Relay Store is for those that have a hearing disability or have issues with normal voice services. According to the Sprint website, "The Sprint Relay Store sells iconic and award winning devices and relay services including the best wireless value in the industry for for people who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or have a Speech-disability."

Now this is where it gets interesting. On the Data Only Plan - Sprint Relay Store Page it clearly states that the service plan is available for $29.99 for feature phones or $39.99 for smartphones. Where this starts to get interesting is using Skype's unlimited US voice calling plan with a Skype to Go number ($2.99 a month + $15 a year for the Skype to Go number) and getting unlimited voice/text/data for around $45 a month. While this is completely abusing the wonderful plan that Sprint has put in place for the hard of hearing, for the budget crunchers that need to have a cheap plan, it certainly offers that.

When asked for a comment about anyone signing on to this plan, a Sprint sales representative said they are not allowed to discriminate against those that hear fine and they would have to allow it. This plan also includes the Sprint VRS system that will encode all calls placed through your Sprint # to text - so be aware that you cannot use this service with voice calls - unless routed through your Skype number.

Enjoy the new found fun and excitement of the Data Only Plan though, hopefully it will roll out soon to the rest of the market as Smartphone users are more concerned now with data calls than voice minutes.

5 Minute App Review: TCM Music Tag Editor

We all get those pesky MP3 files transfered to our cards that just don't have the right information encoded to them. Whether it's missing an album title, art or just has the wrong song name, ID3 editors are something that is almost a necessity for today's smartphone lovers.

Finding the right ID3 editor is tough and we've seen quite a few different ones. They all have pluses and minuses, but our review today had more of the positives than negatives today.

TCM Music Tag Editor is a free program available from the Android Market. It's a very simple program that makes it quick and easy to navigate through your mislabeled tracks and even easier to correct them.

You select the song, correct the errors or use autofix to correct the problems. You can also fix the album artwork by selecting the box next to the cover art, you can scroll through the downloaded choices for that artist and albums.

The program is simple, small and works efficiently. The tagging seemed accurate, changes were made quickly and the library was updated immediately.

TMC Music Tag Editor: 4 out of 5 stars - Free in the Android Market

5 Minute App Review: Memory Booster Ad-Free

It's a sad day when the Free App of the Day is something that 85% of Android users are unable to take advantage of, but it's even worse when that 85% chimes in to beat the product to a pulp.

Now rated at 1.5 stars, Memory Booster has been destroyed by users right and left for being an application that didn't work or isn't needed. Being an Evo user, you fall into the not needed/won't work crowd, but if you still know people carrying the older Hero, Moment or other low physical memory device, this appears is pretty sweet.

The premise is simple, it kills application and, for lack of a better term, defrags your RAM by clustering open space and freeing smaller chunks. It's not a necessary operation, and may not even work all together, but it does seem to make older devices run faster and more efficient.

While we don't recommend this for Evo users, for older devices it pretty well rocks.

Memory Booster Ad-Free is available in the Market or Amazon Appstore for $2.99.

Memory Booster Ad-Free: 2 out of 5 stars for Non-Evo users only (Android 2.1 or earlier or less than 128MB of RAM)

Slacker Slacks Off For Evo Users

Our long time favorite online streaming App has been giving us some major headaches of late. Slow buffering times, major drops, and just overall poor quality. The quality drop is something we can live with short term, but the buffering times and song skipping is getting old really fast.

When asked for a comment, Slacker simply explained that all their versions are extensively tested before a release is made and to check without network provider to see if there were outages or drops in our area. That’s easy enough to do and 2 weeks later, we still have the same issues – without any outages on the Sprint network in our area.

So, hopefully the kinks will be worked out soon and for now, you can set the Local Media Playback to ON instead of Auto for better performance.

Root Returns With rEVOlutionary Method

After that long wait since Gingerbread boinked the standard Evo 4G root method, owners are once again happy to have that all important Superuser APK. The greatness that is EVO root allows for accessing additional features, removal of non-used applications and of course, installation of custom ROMs.

REVOlutionary is an amazingly simple root method that requires a quick download from your PC, then a quick powercycle or two, and you are rocking a completely unlocked Evo.

Check out http://www.revolutionary.io for all the details and downloads.

Editorial: Sadly, It's Almost Time...

Strangely, I feel a bit of remorse writing this piece. It's always hard, especially in the cell industry to hear three little letters - "E-O-L" - which in terms that non-tech can appreciate, means that dinosaur is dead. According to a screen shot captured by a faithful Sprint employee and leaked on to SprintFeeds, the EVO 4G is destined for the refurb yard as early as September for the white model and October for the black.

Normally, pieces like this are a dime a dozen, but normally, they don't involve a device that possibly saved a wireless carrier. Sprint was in disarray, losing customer share left and right, bleeding money and had almost nothing to offer a consumer to jump on board. The Pre was a year old, the Moment was plagued with issues and the Hero just didn't have the guts to keep up with the newer devices anymore. They were treading water...

Along came the world's first "4G" phone and the front facing camera to the US. The commercials made it seem almost too amazing - and for the record, they did fudge a little. Sure, it had it's issues, and the battery life was pretty pathetic, but overall, it's about all you can ask for in a smartphone and more - even today.

The marking down to $99 on contract was the first step in the eventual kiss of death to the original EVO, but the lackluster response to the EVO 3D almost breathed new life into the aging device. Perhaps it would be wise of Sprint to consider dumping some of those "Entry Level" LG Optimus handsets and maybe a certain under performing Zio and think about keeping their "cheap" handset offering in the form of the EVO 4G?

We know, wishful thinking, but doesn't it really make more sense than pumping cheap crap in to the market where users become dissatisfied and leave for another carrier? Just our 2 cents...

Picasa Storage Not Killed With Google+ Instant Upload

For those that were lucky enough to land that early Google+ invite, using the application from your EVO has been monumentally awesome. Sure, there are bugs in every beta program, but the auto upload feature, combined with Sprint Unlimited data just makes like amazingly simple. Simple is good, but even better than simple is the astounding - wow factor - item that we have discovered.

The original instructions stated that any image that was 800x600 or less would not count against your 'Google' limit when uploaded and you could share all you wanted. We decided to test this and launched an all out assault on our Picasa account last evening with a 244 photo upload directly from our device through the Google+ instant share feature. 400MB later, our 244 images were placed in the Instant Upload folder on our Picasa page with no additional data used from our Picasa cap.

Hopefully, someone from Google will reach out to our requests for an explanation on the new system and how the data usage works, but for now, consider your instant uploads from the Google+ app as freebies until further notice.

Can You Run a Business From the EVO?

With the economy continuing to struggle, many individuals have left behind their jobs - whether by their choice or not - and started profitable home businesses. Websites like Etsy, Ebay and Amazon offer prospective crafters, pickers and resellers excellent values for marketing products. The digital age has brought commercial photography setup costs to new lows. Online billing, data entry and call center jobs have also been brought in to the home with amazing ease and a high speed internet connection. This lead us to look at how the EVO can help you run your business, or even run it for you...

Staying Connected: This one is obvious. With the EVO, your entire communications suite is in the palm of your hand. Email, Voicemail, Instant messaging, Skype, Video conferencing and more are all just one app away. These valuable programs mean faster response times, less time in front of the computer and better experiences for those contacting you.

Business Presence: So, you have your Sprint cell number, but you need a business line as well. The simple answer is to set up a Google Voice account for your business. You can have it ring through as your "Business Number" so you always know that a client is calling instead of that telemarketer. You can also use Google Voice's online setup to customize a message, select ring-through days and times and more. Nothing is worse than not having an existing business number, and Google will even port your normal number for a flat $20.

Accepting Payments: Did you know that with apps like Square you can accept credit cards right on your EVO? A simple swipe of the card and 3% later, your money is on the way to the bank. No more waiting for payments, accepting checks from unknowns or having to risk carrying $100's from the flea market. Paypal is also available as a great option for those that aren't in with Square or other payment processor.

Time Management: This is often the most overlooked form of waste in companies, big or small. Time is something most don't calculate in to that bottom line figure. With a good time management program, you can easily free time in you schedule for fun, while making the most of the time you spend working. Lost items are probably the biggest form of wasted time in the office. If you can't find a document or appointment, you just lost the time you spent looking for it, plus the time to redo it. Programs like Scan2PDF, FilesAnywhere, and Docs can turn your phone into an PDF creating, Document faxing, cloud storage processing monster that keeps your data all in one place - neatly organized and ready to go.

Organization: This goes directly back to time management. If you are well organized, you will have mastered your time management. Specifically, if you aren't wasting time, you are going to be more productive. Organizing on the EVO is simple. The integration of Google Calendar allows you to create multiple calendars for business, personal and family events. A simple color change and you can easily tell what's coming and if it's a business event, personal item or even something that someone else invited you to. Use the Google Calendar integration with the HTC Agenda widget and your calendar is right on one of the 7 home screens with one touch access to everything else on the schedule.

Bids and More: Some businesses require customer bids and quotes. There is nothing faster for generating a quote on a mobile device than Google Docs. If that is a bit more than you want to deal with, you can easily download Handy Quote (full) from the Market that allows customized quotes right from your device as well. By CC'ing yourself on the email, you can also use apps like Printershare to print that invoice/estimate from anywhere right to your home PC's printer.

Replacing the Home Office: There is nothing worse than having that dedicated workspace at home, and finding it a mess on a daily basis. The EVO can help by keeping your time organized, your documents in the cloud, your calendar in your pocket and notes on your home screen. No more post it notes stuck everywhere. No more piles to be filed. Just simplistic document management, equipment management and time management.

Overall, although they aren't quite there yet, smartphones are quickly replacing our home offices, mainly because we don't want to be in our home offices. Offices clutter the home, take time away from our families and really become more of a dumping ground than a functional workspace. Our offices become our space to hate, just like the old 9-5 that we left before having a home office. The EVO really does a great job, for most business uses, of standing in for an office when we can't be there. Email, Quotes, and even printing hard copies of items are all possible from anywhere with your EVO. While you might not think so, you can actually replace your home office for one on the road.

Think of this as another excuse to order your free EVO today before they are gone. Get it at http://www.getsmartphones.info while supplies last. If you prefer a bit more horsepower for your device, the EVO3D is also available at $179.99.

Other's Moving On, We're Still About The 4G

One by one, the EVO sites are slipping away from their 4G roots and moving onward to greener pastures. The strange part is, it's times like this when new users need more help than ever, and we are sticking around to be there for you. The EVO 4G is on deal central everywhere right now, for crazy prices like FREE - get yours today at http://www.getsmartphones.info in black or white - and more users are adding them for family lines, replacement phones or just because they are tried and true performers.

The more blogs that drift away from the 4G and move on to the 3D or even the View, the more users will need quality information. The EVO is our device, we have a few of them in our midst and don't plan on switching any time soon. The device still has plenty of horsepower for today's applications, and with SD card installation for apps, you have plenty of storage available too.

Sure, the EVO has some shortcomings, but pound for pound, dollar for dollar, it's still one of the best smartphones on the planet. So, keep following us for more information and how to's coming soon. We will continue waiting for a 2.3.3 compatible screen capture program (that we don't have to purchase again) that will work without rooting, but until then we will keep using stock captures from the market for reviews and more!

Did Gingerbread Make Sense Or Break It?

Yesterday's post on changing your EVO's Home Screen got quite a response from people eager to swap those Sense-i-ble views for something a bit more, well, bland. Vanilla Android start screens are definitely the way Android was meant to be enjoyed. Start to finish, a little package of easy to use, yet pretty functionality. When you take that simplicity and add the beauty of Sense on top of it, you get a pretty slick interface, but also a bit of a headache.

Since the Gingerbread update, the Sprint forums are all a glow with complaints of HTC's pride and joy shutting down like a US soccer team defense against Mexico. From everywhere, the reports are flying in that Sense isn't working well since the update. The common factor appears to be when exiting any application that requires a tiny bit of 'processing power and memory' the 'white screen of death with the HTC logo' comes on taking forever to come back to the home screen.

After speaking with an HTC representative, they are aware that the Improved Power Management feature of Android 2.3 is creating some issues with Sense and may be the cause of the restarts when exiting some applications. The fix appears to be a hybrid blend of the 2.3.3 designed Sense 3.0 and the 1.6 designed Sense 2.1 that the EVO is currently running. They do not have a time table for a fix to the issue, but rest assured, they are working on some solution to the problem.

Currently, the best solutions we have to offer for the reloading issue is a three part answer. First, live with the reload when you leave memory chugging apps... Second, uninstall all Sense based widgets to decrease the load time and the drain on the CPU so 2.3 will not be as likely to shut it down... Third, try a home screen replacement like ADW or Go Launcher EX, they do not seem to be as affected by the IPM system as Sense is.

There will surely be more to come on this and we look forward to having answers for you soon!

Go Launcher EX - The Free Sense Replacement

We love Sense, we really do. There are days though, that Sense just doesn't work for us. The random restarts when coming back from the browser, or from YouTube... The slowly loading widgets when the need to refresh... The lack of customizing the active buttons at the bottom of the screen... These are all things that just keep Sense from being perfect. So, to start off our week, we installed the free home screen replacement called "Go Launcher EX".

Go Launcher EX, from the GO Launcher Dev Team, is an amazing little application. The setup is very quick and simple. Stock out of the box, we found 15 interchangeable icons located at the bottom of the screen. 5 of these were preset with standard items: Phone, People, Application Menu, Messages and Internet. With a quick swap, we changed these out to our favorites. We then added media programs to the next 5 blanks and social networking programs to the other 5 blanks. Overall, tweaking took just a few minutes.

The home screens were just as easy to customize and setup. With just a few long presses we had an amazing home experience. Except, once again, the Facebook widget seemed to leave us a bit sad, mainly due to the fact it didn't filter 'applications' from our Newsfeed, even when turned off in Facebook itself. Chalk one up for Launcher Pro and it's Facebook widget again...

The app drawer has something for everyone. The drawer offers the standard vertical layout from Android or the side to side 'feed' from programs like TouchWiz. Two great options for fans of either.

The extra bonus to Go Launcher EX is the amount of widgets that are available for use. Go has designed a few great ones that are free to download in the market. Facebook, Messages, Task Killer, Calendar, Gmail notification and Message notification were all active on our screen at one point. For the most part, we liked them all, except for those 'Farmville' notifications on our Facebook widget.

Overall, we give this a major thumbs up and since it's free, you should give it a shot as well. The program is available in the Market as are the free widget items. To enable this, you simply press your home button and select Go Launcher EX from the list. To make it your default screen (only do this after you've decided you want to use it full time) simply check the box at the bottom of the list that says, "Use by default for this action." before you select Go Launcher EX from the list.

If you decide to go back to Sense, you just enter your Application menu (Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>Go Launcher EX - and select Clear Defaults. This will get you back to choosing which app to use for your home screen at each button press. To remove Go Launcher, simply uninstall the app and it will revert back to Sense only. WARNING - Do Not Delete alternate launchers until you have cleared the defaults!

Go Launcher EX is free and available in the Android Market - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex&feature=search_result

Evo 3D Heading To Europe Soon

Anytime an EVO makes the journey overseas it's just one more case for the line being one of the best lineups for smartphones on the planet. Now, with the entry level Evo Shift, the 'mid-range' 4G, the high-end 3D and the Flyer/View tablet, the EVO lineup is very solid. With news of the Evo 4G+ coming out in Asian countries soon, the European nations have been aching for something new for themselves. Fortunately, today is the day for them. HTC has announced that the Evo 3D will be coming soon to a country near them.

The 3D, with it's dual-core, dual-camera, 3D coated screen, will be making its way to various carriers across Europe next month. While most of the countries involved have already seen the similar styled (and processing power toting) Sensation, the unique 3D experience that the EVO offers is something that many will still jump on. The extra large 1730 mAh battery may also pull a few fans over to the 3D's corner as well.

Pricing and carrier information has not been released yet, but look for it soon.

5 Minute App Review: Jenga

So here we are again, looking at a way to kill time on the train, at the airport or even just sitting at the mall. If you are doing the latter, Jenga from NaturalMotionGames is a great choice. If you happen to be moving around in a car, not so much.

Jenga is a direct play off the original block stacking game from Parker Brothers where you remove blocks from the bottom of a stack, place them on top of the stack, all while not trying to knock said stack over. Everyone's seen it, almost everyone's played it, but not many have tried it on a touch screen.

The controls were remarkably good - especially on a screen the size of the EVO's, but we can see where smaller screens would present a real challenge. The graphics are phenomenal, the play was quick and exciting and overall, the game gets a positive thumbs up.

The only issue we found with game play is that if you're moving, forget about it. One slight bump, jump or flick, your blocks are tumbling.

5 Minute App Review: Baseball Superstars 2011

I have been having entirely too much fun with this game. Baseball Superstars 2011 is amazingly entertaining, speedy to play and a joy to have on your EVO. You can select from Season, League or Game modes, all with the opportunity to earn G points to purchase in game merchandise, like faster shoes, better gloves and more.

The only complaint with the game play is that baseball takes forever to play. 9 innings is just too long. Fortunately, you can swing into game settings and set it to auto play, so you only hit when your batter is up or pitch when you have a jam. The configurations are endless and you can set them however you'd like.

The game itself is reminiscent of the Nintendo games of old and the delightful soundtrack only adds to the old-school feel. The entertainment value alone of this app makes it worth the $0.99 price tag, but the game play far outweighs the cost of a candy bar. Overall, we haven't found a better way to kill time at a better price. The paid version is ad free and uses minimal data.

Evo vs. Evo: 4G vs. 3D

There comes a time when every smartphone user has a debate, and lately its been more like every few hours that EVO owners are facing a new dilemma... Is it time for something new?
For weeks now, EVO users have been barraged with dual-screens, pure Google, faster processors and keyboards. For weeks they've heard about the newer 3D version of their beloved handset. For months EVO faithful have been told their handsets are outdated, slow, and need to be replaced. But finally, tomorrow, June 24, 2011 is officially the day that the EVO 4G loses its stronghold and falls to the now networks latest beast.

The EVO 3D is the newest device in the EVO line and it will be hitting stores tomorrow for the general public to grasp up and begin shooting life in 3D. The first instinct is to go plop down your $500 and get the newest and greatest, but let this serve as a warning - you just might want to hold off on that thought.

The original EVO 4G is still a whopping $149.99 on Sprint.com. The 3D is slated to hit at $50 more than that. Now, Sprint has always been about keeping their price points on their devices a bit higher than the 'BOGO' loving VZW, but seriously, if the 3D was more than a niche device, that 4G should be down under $100 right now to clear shelf space for it. Most of the online retailers are selling the 4G for nothing - our own http://www.getsmartphones.info has had the 4G running free for a week now - prior to that, both the white and black versions were down to $85 with new 2 year agreement.

It doesn't make sense to keep a device that has been out over 12 months now at full price, unless, it's still the best device you have to offer. Maybe, just maybe, Sprint isn't sure whether or not the 3D will take the throne from the 4G? Maybe there is the 4G+ refresh coming down the pipe that was just leaked in Korea. Everyone thought the Samsung Epic would bring the 4G down, it didn't happen. Then the Evo Shift, again, nothing. Finally, the beauty of the Samsung Nexus S would take the throne, but even that amazing device hasn't slowed the 4G at all.

Perhaps, the 4G was just the perfect phone at the perfect time. Perhaps it's still the perfect phone at the perfect time. Sprint really hit one out of the park with the 4G, and from the software bugs that are already plaguing the 3D, perhaps everyone would be better off with a 4G...

Netflix is Back on the EVO - and in the Market!

The Evo is back with all its netflixing magic today as the newest update in the Android Market is now offered for the Evo again. Call it luck, skill or just awesomeness, but you cm start rocking those episodes of South Park and Stargate SG1 on the go once again.

Sprint vs. The Others...

For some time now, Sprint has been bashing the 'other guys' for their shady practices surrounding their data plans - and the hidden costs associated with them. Today, Verizon Wireless becomes the latest casualty of the 'unlimited data wars' by releasing the plans for their tiered data structure going in to effect next month.

For some reason, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon Wireless all think that it is OK to charge more per GB than most can possibly imagine - all the while touting the amazing things their devices can do. For instance, 'the average user' only consumes around 500MB of data per month. Using this thinking, the big 3 decide that they will make a 'cheaper' $20 a month plan that includes 2GB of data with a $10 charge for every GB the user goes over. This really makes the carriers seem like heroes since the data rate 4 years ago was $50 a month.

Fast forward to the modern smartphone, with Flash, Netflix, Crackle, streaming radio, cloud storage, instant photo sharing and all the other amazing amenities that the Droid Charge, LG Revolution or any other monstrous new device that they are hocking this week offers and watch those data totals climb. In the last year, the average data user has gone from a mere 200MB to the amazingly high 500MB per month. When you think about a single Netflix movie running over 400MB alone, you will quickly see that number climb even higher.

The carriers will continue to push these new services, and will eventually get rid of voice minutes all together. It's not fair that you see an ad for Netflix on the LG Revolution - only to find out that you need to sign up for the $50 plan to watch more than 30 minutes of the service a week. It's not fair for Verizon to sell you their Navigator service when it counts against your data cap. It's not fair for NFL Live to cost an extra $10 a month, and then have that also count against your data cap. The carriers are bleeding customers dry with their, "Look what your phone can do if you just pay a bit extra..." attitudes.

The bottom line for smartphone users is that these plans are going to become the norm. Unlimited data is a thing of the past - and even Sprint isn't immune to it. With AT&T purchasing T-Mobile and Verizon finally raising their rates and going tiered, look for Sprint to follow suit as their LTE expansion plans come to pass. Building out networks isn't cheap, and we understand that, but when you have to sacrifice dinner to pay for Facebook updates, people will eventually stop caring and go back to having a phone.

Until then, get your Evo for free at http://www.getsmartphones.info and get locked in to a 2 year deal with that $79.99 all you can eat data/text/mobile plan. You can thank us later!

New Update Restores Netflix - Fixes VM Issue (UPDATED-UPDATED)

In a slightly less than surprising move today, Sprint and HTC released the 2nd update for the EVO in the last 2 weeks. The Android 2.3 MR2 software update builds on the Gingerbread launch that the EVO received about 2 weeks ago, but brings along fixes for Netflix, Voicemail notification and hearing aid compatibility.

The 4.24.651.1 update officially brings Netflix compatibility back to the EVO. The DRM issues seem to be fixed, but there is no word on whether or not the update will cause issues with album art or the preloaded Blockbuster App downloads that are on your device like the previous update did. The few users that reported the voicemail notification issue - getting a false reading of new voicemails - should find happiness in the fact that the issue has been corrected. Finally, for the hearing impaired, you now will be able to use your device with your hearing aid once again.

The issues still at hand from the first 2.3 update are the compass directional issue, the issue of Sense being 'killed' by the built-in memory handling and the somewhat garbled text to speech interface. The compass directional issue really only effects those that use the EVO as a training device or use it for off road navigation. The Sense issue is more of a nusance than a major flaw, but waiting for Sense to reopen after a browsing session is very annoying. Finally, the voice to text feature needs a bit of tweaking to get back to where it was. Different programs seem to react differently, so judge this one as you will.

Again, just like the last update, most of the changes that Gingerbread brought to the table are under the hood and won't be seen by the average use, but anytime a carrier pushes for a fix this quickly, it is a positive thing.

UPDATE: It appears that the launch has been delayed or canceled for unknown reasons. The page that earlier in the day featured version 4.24.651.1 with a June 20, 2011 release date has been downgraded to show the original June 6th update of version 4.22.651.2. So, whether or not the new 'Friday' rumors hold or not, it looks like Netflixers will have to wait at least a few more days.

UPDATE UPDATE: It was a happy morning today when most EVO users reported the update was available for their device and the 6.51MB update was downloaded and installing. Unfortunately, it appears that the 'Netflix Fix' rumors may have been exaggerated since the app is still not available in the Market and the EVO is not listed on the Netflix compatibility page.

Is WiMax Really Slow?

Ok, so there we go. The talk at BGR, which is being spewed all over the Internet, says Sprint has inked a deal to make the jump to LTE using Lightsquared's new network.

First off, let me say I think this is a horrible rumors that makes very little sense for Sprint to be involved in. Second, I don't think there is any truth to the rumors. And finally, if this is true, I think that this move will be the end of Sprint, Clear and the hundreds of minor carriers around the US.

Sprint doesn't need to worry about transitioning their network yet and should continue to place their resources behind the WiMax powered data path. Sure LTE is more flexible, offers faster data rates and will probably become the standard soon enough, but Sprint and Clear can transition their hardware to LTE in a very quick change, at a minimal expense, when they need to.

Clear has already done backhaul switching in Phoenix and successfully tested LTE technology on their lines. The results were a faster and more powerful network than Verizon's and better coverage than AT&T.

For now, I'm rocking my 9+ mbps down and 1.4mbps up Evo and loving the Sprint network. And a quick note for those that aren't. You can grab the Evo4G in Black or White for $89.99 or preorder the Evo3D for $179.99 from http://www.getsmartphones.info today.

UPDATE:  The EVO 4G in White and Black are both FREE at http://www.getsmartphones.info - we don't know how long this price will be good for, so get yours today!

Minor Gingerbread Fixes Coming 6/20

Great news to those that are having the issue of the "Mysterious Voice Mail Notification"... Sprint and HTC are rolling out yet another update for the 4G that will patch that little glitch, as well as restore the DRM capabilities for the Netflix app.

Hopefully, this fix will also allow the programs like "Shoot Me" or other screen capture programs to function again - sans rooting. The OTA update should be available Monday the 20th according to everyone online, although neither Sprint or HTC has confirmed this.

This date also coincides with the Gingerbread launch for the EVO Shift, so we are hoping that the rumors hold and that we are all streaming that wonderful Netflix again on Monday.

What To Buy With Your End Of Life Device?

Now that the EVO is going the way of the dinosaur and can be had for an amazing price, what do you need to buy with it to make sure that your device survives the 22 months until your next upgrade?

A silicon Gel Skin will provide an excellent measure of protection for your device. The more protection you purchase the better your chances of making it 2 years are. A silicon skin is very affordable and easy to replace. You can get them for $2.99 each from our online store.

An OEM battery is always a good plus to have with any device. You can get the HTC (although not always in the red stock color) battery for the EVO/Touch Pro 2 for $13.99 right now or the generic, which we have had good luck with for only $7.99.

A 32GB Micro SD card will give you plenty of storage. Most can easily make it with a 16GB card, but for those really wanting the ultimate in storage - the $69.99 price tag is a one time deal. When compared to the $24.99 price tag on the 16GB card though, it's a hard sell to upgrade to storage you may never use.

Wall chargers are always great to have around. If you don't have one from past devices, then you can purchase generics for $2.99 from our online store. Always have a spare wall charger and car charger around incase your's decides it doesn't want to work.

The items above are all available online at our accessories store located at http://www.getsmartphones.info/accessories/ and can be purchased with free shipping on orders of $25 or more with the coupon code FREESHIP or you can get an additional 7% off your order with the code CELL7.

Netflix Now Gone For Non-Updaters

In a very strange turn, the Netflix App is no longer available to Evo users running 2.2. When launching the previous installed app, you get an error message telling you to update. When you select ok, you get an item cannot be found error.

Stranger yet is the Android compatibility listing that now has only the HTC Incredible running 2.2 listed.

Hopefully Netflix will get this cleared up for everyone soon as the only thing worse than not having a phone on the app list, is having one that was, and now isn't.

5 Minute App Review: Tune In Radio

In the world of streaming media, it appears that more and more providers are going to a pay only system. Slacker recently made the change to cut offerings to 'non-premium' members. Pandora only gives you 40 hours a month without paying extra. Overall, it seems that the more people that start using these streaming services, the greedier they are getting. Believe us, we get that the overhead associated with these streaming services is high, but when you price yourself out of the market, you become obsolete.

It's this that drives us back to services like Tune-In Radio. Tune in radio is available in a free or premium version.  Tune In is far from perfect, but it does offer streams of most (and we mean not all) of your local stations. Similar programs like iHeartRadio do the same functions, but we were happier with Tune-In's selection of stations in our area.

The actual application is very simple. You select the station you'd like to hear from the list that is provided. If you browse local stations, your GPS will tell the program where you are. You will then see the album art, artist name, song title and more information in the player screen. The premium version allows you to record and playback the audio stream from the online source as well.

The free version has very few limitations and even has a reminder alarm for remembering when your favorite broadcasts start. The premium version has even more functionality and a home screen widget.

Tune-In Radio is available in two versions - the FREE app and the PREMIUM version that will set you back $.99 at the Amazon Appstore.

Free - http://www.amazon.com/TuneIn-Radio/dp/B004GYY714/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1307306676&sr=1-2

Premium - http://www.amazon.com/TuneIn-Radio-Pro/dp/B004XDYJRU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1307306676&sr=1-3

EVO SALE!!!

We love to run stories like this - especially when the reader wins. For some time now, we have been waiting for the day that the $200 price tag falls away from the EVO. Today, it appears that the fall has happened. Our online store partner www.getsmartphones.info is featuring both EVO 4G's at special savings.

The White EVO is now priced at an almost unbelievable $84.99 with new two year contract. The white version features a gloss white backing plate and battery cover. The front is the same black finish as the original.

The Black EVO, yes, the original that hit the market and changed Sprint's fortunes for the positive, is now a lowly $89.99. We have no idea how long this price will be good, but remember, our online partner has a 14 day free shipping return policy and you have 30 days to try out the service before you have to pay to get out of your contract.

The White EVO 4G  can be had at http://t.co/ovrvi1L for that amazing price. Again, we don't know when this deal will end or how long supplies will last, but get that $84.99 EVO while you can.

If you prefer the Black version, get it here http://t.co/7unPMNG while the getting is good for only $89.99.

5 Minute App Review: Redbox

Yes, we know there are a ton of Netflix lovers out there, but there comes a point where "instant" view doesn't have what you want, and you don't want to fork out $20 for a new movie at the store. For this reason alone, Redbox makes sense.

Redbox locations offer same second DVD rentals for a buck or slightly more for those pesky Blu-ray borrowers. You arrive at a kiosk, swipe a credit or debit card and leave with a movie. Return it before 9:00 the next night, and you pay a buck. Miss the deadline, it's only a buck a day more.

The only hassle with Redbox is finding on near you and seeing what they have in the machine. Fortunately, the Redbox app has you covered on both counts. The application makes it simple to view and reserve any movie from any machine in the area. It can even help you find it and navigate to it.

The application is simple, easy to use and about as full featured as you could want. If you are a movie fan and frequent Redbox locations, it's a must have. If you like to rent movies, but are struggling to replace the Blockbuster that closed earlier this year, Redbox's app will help you find the closest location for that too.

Redbox - available in the Android Market (free)

Don't just grab that Gingerbread yet!

As tempting as it is to download that new 2.3 Gingerbread update for your beloved EVO, we are hailing you to hold off for a few days. With the love affair that we have with our wonderous Netflix player, we immediately noticed, "Houston, we have a problem..."

Netflix is currently looking at the issue, but EVO users across the board are reporting major issues with Netflix after their updates have been installed. This could be related to the last update of Netflix itself which rendered quite a few EVO users with broken connections to the streaming content. Sure, you can still manage the queue or look up flicks, but not being able to watch them again is just not acceptable to us.

So, if you've taken the plunge, feel free to shout out below on the comments section about what is working and what isn't working.

Getting The Most From Microsoft Skydrive

One topic that has been getting so much press lately is the 'cloud' services that are coming on board. Amazon's Cloud service allows 5GB of online storage for no charge, with options to purchase more. ZumoDrive offers 2GB's after completing a tutorial. Dropbox, probably the most popular option for Android devices, includes 1GB free and 250MB for every person your refer as well. There are various other serivces, but one that stands out is Microsoft's Skydrive service.

Skydrive offers a whopping 25GB of online storage, and from your PC, you can edit Office documents, view photos and more. After having the amazing experience of Skydrive on an HTC Surround for 2 weeks, I really began to miss my old 'Hotmail' pal and wanted to find new options for accessing my 10 year old photos and older online documents. Sure, Gdocs does a great job for me now, but the history of my content on Skydrive goes way deeper - and is too much to transfer over. Plus, Google only gives me 1GB of online storage without paying the $5 a year for 20GB. Call me cheap, but I like free better.

So my search led me to Sorami's Skydrive Beta app that accesses my Microsoft Skydrive and brings up a file manager of the folder. It allows basic access to the files, download access and upload access to is just a press away. With additional programs like DataViz's Documents to Go, you can actually download, open, edit and reupload your changes to your Skydrive right from your Android powered EVO.

The program still has a few bugs, but it's free and in beta mode so we don't expect perfection. Overall, for the added bonus of 25GB of storage on your EVO, this program is a no brainer. Our hats are off to Sorami and their team on this one.

The Latest And Greatest…

If there is one thing that drives me nuts about our wonderful EVO, it’s that there’s no options for making them better. Unless you root, you’re stuck with the stock software. Unless you hack, the HDMI out is limited. Unless you buy the HTC Flyer, you only have a 4.3” screen for blogging. And of course, unless you know some pretty powerful higher ups somewhere, you’re going to have to pay an arm and a leg for the upgrade next month.

With the EVO 4G’s shelf life coming to an end, the EVO 3D coming soon and the addition of the EVO View, Evocentric is about to take on an all new meaning. These new brothers or cousins or whatever you want to call them, are going to offer those EVO lovers out there an amazing selection of devices that will fill about any void in their multimedia loving lives.

The EVO is still full priced on Sprint’s website, so the rumors of a June 4th launch may be a bit premature. Usually, before a device gets pushed the way side, the carriers will try to drop inventories to an extremely low level by dropping the 2 year pricing. From the sounds of things, the $199 price point of the EVO 4G may not be going anywhere – even after the launch of the 3D and View.

The View should come out of the gate with a 32GB retail of $799 – well above an of its marketplace competition. The 2 year contract pricing might cut that to $399, but that still places it well out of the cost range of those that dropped $500 for the EVO a short year ago.

The 3D is predicted to hit at the same $500 that the original did. Unfortunately for most EVO owners, they are still another year away from that $300 upgrade price. We will see if Sprint steps up to get more fans on the EVO bandwagon and gives a great upgrade deal to those that ‘lost’ their 1 year upgrades in April.

Overall, the EVO family will soon have something to offer everyone. The keyboard lovers have the Shift. The gadget hounds will have the 3D. The folks out there that want a bit more storage and power can grab a View and use if for their entertainment and reading needs. Of course, that still leaves the original EVO owners with one of the best devices that has ever hit the market – even with the slightly less than optimal battery life.

How To Fandango

Fandango is one of those amazing little apps that everyone should own. The Evo is that multimedia powerhouse for digital entertaining, but every now and again, everyone needs to get out for a real movie.

The application itself is very simple, but the built in features make it awesome. When you first start the app, the GPS is engaged and it locates theaters near you. It will then tell you the new release films, top box office films and top recommendations for you.

A simple flick gets you through the movie list and a quick tap of the top menu sends you to the theaters near you page. The great part of this version over older models is that the GPS feature eliminates the need to know that zip code of the area you are in to find the theater.

Once you select the movie you'd like, you can view the trailer to make sure it's right for you. You can then one click purchase tickets if you have a Fandango account and walk up to the kiosk at your theater and grab your tickets. No lines, no waiting.

Fandango is simply a great app for the Evo or any Android powered device. Get it today in the Market or the Amazon Appstore for free.

Netflixing on the EVO!

Well, it took a long time coming, but the EVO is considered in the highest class Android devices on the market today with the launch of the official Netflix App with full queue management and – VIEWING!

The EVO has always been in the top of the class in video viewing with it’s amazing 800x480 screen. What was lacking was major player software from Netflix, Hulu or other online provider that could utilize that real estate. Fortunately, the hero’s at Netflix have finally come through.

The opening management screen is very straight forward, with quick clicks to popular films that fill your “Top Picks” and Past Views. You can also manage your queue of instant views and DVD subscriptions from the App.

The viewing experience itself is first class. The EVO does a great job of handling the resolution of the videos. The 800x480 format seems to be the resolution choice of Netflix for their mobile app.

The images are crystal clear and flow very well. Over Wi-Fi we experienced zero voice to image lag. Over indoor 3G, the quality dropped and there were some issues, but it was still more than adequate for basic viewing. TV Episodes are probably going to be the most popular choice for the viewing public. The TV selection is great and by skipping forward and backward, the videos load quickly and the buffer time is minimal.

Overall, the free app does an amazing job of providing another reason why the EVO should still be at the top of your cellphone wish list. The EVO is in-stock and ready to ship to your door with FREE shipping today. Purchase yours now with FREE shipping and try it for 14 days. If you aren’t happy, we will even cover the shipping back!

Purchase your EVO in black now at GetSmartphones.Info at an amazing $184.99 or choose the super popular white version with from GetSmartphones.info for the $149.99.

Frustrated With The Sprint/Google Voice Integration Process?

In the last few days, Sprint and Google have been rolling out their "Integrated Google Voice" experience. For many, this transition has been nothing but a monstrous headache. Can't port number... Won't complete porting... Phone's not allowing the Google number to become active... The lack of support from either company on the issues... It's enough to make one pull their hair out.

Fortunately for all involved, there is help. Just have to slow down the process, take a look at what's going on and realize why things aren't working. Below are the qualifications for numbers to become active on the new GV/Sprint system.

1) Private Personal Lines ONLY - if you receive a corporate discount, chance are your number is marked in the Sprint system as a Government or Public Sector account. Sprint does this by default to corporate users with discounts.
2) Your account balance may have a 'due' amount. Even if it is not 'past due', Sprint may have a flag on the account to not allow transferring the number.
3) Google Voice does not work with any line that has Call Blocking or Call Tones enabled. You need to cancel both these services and allow 24 hours for the changes to take effect.
4) The GV system may have been overloaded when you tried the first 5 times. It's not a great answer, but it's one of the answers that Google is giving in random order. Try again tomorrow and see if it works...

The issue that seems to be plaguing most people is the "corporate discount" issue. It seems there are many users in Sprint land that were given a discount when they signed up that they really didn't deserve, and now they are going to suffer a bit for it by either giving up the discount, or losing the GV option.

If you have a legitimate discount through your employer or school, simply call Sprint, have them disable the discount/account label, switch your number to Google Voice, then call Sprint back and have them reapply your discount. It's pretty simple. The official reason for this is that Sprint sold blocks of 'like' numbers to coporations, i.e. 555-555-0001 to 555-555-1000 and those companies have those numbers set up on an internal network. If random people starting porting those numbers to GV, it might interfere with the setups those companies have in place. Again, this is an easy fix, so just call and get it worked out - or better yet, stop by your local Sprint store for help.

If your account carries a higher balance, Sprint may have it flagged to prevent you from leaving with a large bill. This can even happen when you've ordered a new device and had it billed to your account. If you have any outstanding charges, Sprint will not allow the GV merger. If you have an excessive balance, even if it's not due yet, Sprint will not allow the GV merger. If your online balance shows $0.00, you should be ok to move assuming you have your account rolled to a personal one, not a corporate one.

The third portion of the conversion that is stopping many people is call blocking. Call Tones are also affecting a small percentage of users, but the majority in this class are being stopped by blocking. This is caused by the user has blocked a number at some point in time for some reason. It may be an Ex, or a collection company or even just a harassing wrong number dialer when you first got your new phone - but whatever the cause, if Call Block is enabled, you can't move your number. This again is a simple fix. Call Sprint, remove call blocking and any numbers that are currently blocked. The same applies for Call Tones - just have them remove the option and you should be golden.

The last reported error that EVO users are suffering from with the transition is the official Google Excuse - we were overloaded and had to stop for the day. Nothing you can do about this one, except for making sure that you are all set with the three steps above, then try again tomorrow.

Overall, if you do a bit of planning and analysis ahead of time, the move from Sprint to Google should be a simple one. If you don't know the pitfalls, then you might not know what happened to your move. The other part to remember is the Sprint representatives can't help you with a Google problem and vice versa. Just take your time, and remember, it's a brand new process, so give them all a bit of a break.

Another EVO Cousin Rears Its Head...

Just when all seemed calm in EVO-land, yet another possible replacement to the original EVO 4G appears. The HTC Kingdom is wandering through the blogosphere right now, touting it's 1.2ghz processor and 4" display to anyone that will look at it. The device is certainly a worthy successor to the 4G, but is it enough of an upgrade to warrant waiting for it?
The 4G is bound and determined to hold on as long as it can to it's Sprint dominance. It has withstood the attacks from the Epic, the Shift 4G and even the new-fangled Echo. Eventually, its luck will run out, and it will become a second rate pony in the Sprint stables, but when?
The timing may be sooner than later for this one if the blogs are correct. The Kingdom is slated to hit the market with a single-core 1.2Ghz Snapdragon processor, 768MB of RAM, and a 4" qHD display. We believe the reports of this becoming the EVO HD 4G, and the direct replacement of the original EVO 4G. While this may signal the end of the EVO 4G's life span, the device has sat at the top of Sprint's lineup far longer than any other carrier's flagship device.
Other carriers have had dozens of devices since the 4G was launched, but Sprint stuck to a great device that has now run its course. It's time to replace our beloved EVO with something new, something shiny. It will be a sad day when it comes, but for those that want to wait, the wait will be worth it. No, not the wait for the new EVO HD, but the wait for the $100 price drop that the EVO 4G will get when they are ready to launch the new one.
With the Shift occupying the lowest position on the totem pole at $150, the 4G at $200 and the 3D expected to hit at $300, the HD should slide nicely into the second spot at $200 making the 4G's clearance price a measly $100.
Just don't wait too long trying to get that price, the EVO 4G has never had a great in-stock rate and might just disappear before you get a chance to grab one at that price.
